At Football Study Hall this week I examined McElwain's Florida offense.
I suspect that Will Grier is the real deal and that McElwain is going to make a lot of noise in Gainesville with this kid at the helm. It's clear from a few looks at that program that McElwain is very much a detail-oriented, process person much like Saban. In other words, Florida got exactly what they were looking for.
Being able to run a good pro-style offense is invaluable in Florida because many of the players in that state grow up intending to go to the pros and the pro-style system is the official theology of the state's church of football. Obviously Urban Meyer did fine with his spread but it helps to keep kids at home to have the pro-style pitch or risk losing the top players to Georgia, Florida State, or Alabama.
So far McElwain hasn't been killing it on the recruiting trail. They're sitting at 20 commitments already but many are of the 3-star variety, including QB Kyle Trask. However, McElwain's experience at Alabama and Colorado State suggests that he knows which 3-star players to grab and you can also see him stocking up on OL and DBs to ensure that the lifeblood of his program is pumping strong when he's in years three and four and he's looking for an extension.
